Essay referencing can be a headache at university. How many references do you need? When should you use a reference? Should you use references even when you haven't used a direct quotation? How many references are too many? By knowing how to reference properly, you can reduce the stress involved in your essay writing.

Remember, markers also want to see evidence of your own, original thinking. Using too many references does not leave much room for your personal standpoint to shine through. As a general rule, you should aim to use one to three, to support each key point you make. This of course depends on subject matter and the point you are discussing, but acts as a good general guide. It can be useful to have a best practice breakdown of your essay to help you work out how many references to use. Here's a rough guide to help you get the balance right for any piece of academic work:

the general rule is that 3 paragraphs are minimum for an essay. So, no matter how short your essay is, you should still need 3 paragraphs. If you are really for some reason writing a 100 word essay, then you should have one short sentence for both your introduction and conclusion.

On average for a five-paragraph essay, I write around 1,000-1300 words. For an eight paragraph essay, I write around 2,000-2,600 words on the document. Keep in mind your quotes too, you should have one quote per paragraph (expected) or two (recommended). It really is up to the person though, I have a buddy who writes considerably less than I do, but is able to get his point across. It is really up to the person.

Of course, if you're using a lot of quotes from other sources, make sure you paraphrase your main arguments to give the essay your own voice and make it clear which words are yours and which are someone else's. Plagiarism is serious and all your hard work could be completely discounted if you don't cite properly!

Your conclusion shouldn't take too long at all. You're basically just summarising the arguments you've spent the last few hours detailing, and explaining how they all tie together to support your overall response to the question you chose.

However, if you're blessed with the ability to write immaculately and at speed, you may not need this long to edit your essay. If so, allow yourself a little more time after dinner to finish writing your essay.

While starting essays a day before the deadline is far from recommended and unlikely to get you the best grades, this guide should at least prevent tears in the library (been there) and the need for any extensions.

For one of my finals, we actually have to write a 3500 words essay in 24 hours... We will get the topic at 10am on a Tuesday, and have to hand it back at 10am the day after... so, it's not a bug, it's a feature

But I have only 6hours left to complete my essay, and it must be a very long one. What should I do? I got the outline, but seems not provide plenty information to write. God...I'm panic, procrastinated and stressed. ;

Most of the times, essays come with specific requirements. There are different types of essays that are taught at schools and colleges, serving different purposes in the academic lives of students. Each and every essay comes with certain guidelines that need to be followed. One of the most important guidelines includes the word limit requirement.

  • Table of contentsEssay length guidelines

  • How long is each part of an essay?

  • Using length as a guide to topic and complexity

  • Can I go under the suggested length?

  • Can I go over the suggested length?

A short essay will need a focused, specific topic and a clear, straightforward line of argument. A longer essay should still be focused, but it might call for a broader approach to the topic or a more complex, ambitious argument.

A 4000-word essay is a standard graduate-level college assignment. Its structure will depend on the discipline and institution. Moreover, a paper of 4000 to 4100 words is not necessarily an essay. A student might be assigned a research paper of such a length. The possible research fields might be marketing, nursing, linguistics, etc.

The proposed business plan presents an entry strategy into the Belgian market and an effective marketing plan for penetration and sustainable business for the auto insurance policy product. This means that the company should select an effective internationalization strategy for business survival and sustainability in the short and long term....

Average novel chapter lengths fall in the 3,000- to 4,000-word range. But there are plenty of wildly successful books that have longer and shorter chapters. Nonfiction chapters often fall around the 4,000-word mark, but this is highly dependent on subject matter.

That said, chapter length does matter, mostly because every chapter should have a purpose. This is one of the keys to writing a book chapter. And once that purpose has been fulfilled, you can end the chapter knowing that you've accomplished what you came to do. Even if the chapter is 500 words. Or 5,000.

But when we're talking about fiction vs nonfiction books, it's important to consider the overall length of these books. Your average fiction book (80,000 to 100,000 words) is longer than your average nonfiction book (40,000 to 60,000 words).

The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien has an average chapter length of right around 7,500 words. The longest chapter in the book is 16,300 words. The Hobbit has an average chapter word count of 5,000, and the longest chapter comes in at just over 10,000 words.

Frank Herbert's Dune features an average chapter word count of about 3,700. The longest chapter in the book is around 9,500 words. The Forever War by Joe Haldeman is split up into several parts, each of which is split again into chapters. The average chapter length of this sci-fi book is around 2,400 words.

Helen Fielding's Bridget Jones's Diary has an average chapter length of 2,000 words. On the other hand, the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt has an average chapter length of nearly 25,000 words! This book is perhaps the best example that longer chapter lengths won't prevent you from having a wildly successful book.

Wouldn't it be nice if I could tell you right here, without a doubt, that your chapters should be a certain length? Unfortunately, this kind of guidance isn't in the cards. And if it were, we would probably all get bored of reading pretty quickly, knowing exactly how long the next chapter would be.

And while writing tools like the Atticus chapter word count feature are helpful in guiding your writing along, the number of words in a chapter should never be foremost in your mind while writing. Instead, focus on what you want to accomplish with the chapter. Chapter goals are usually one or more of the following:

Suspense novels use cliffhangers to end chapters more than any other genre. But not every chapter should end with a cliffhanger. Usually, the tension has been building for a few chapters when the cliffhanger gets you, making you turn the page to see what happens, even though you should have been asleep long ago.

These are original research manuscripts. The work should report scientifically sound experiments and provide a substantial amount of new information. The article should include the most recent and relevant references in the field. The structure should include an Abstract, Keywords, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, and Conclusions (optional) sections, with a suggested minimum word count of 4000 words. Please refer to the journal webpages for specific instructions and templates.

Brief reports are short, observational studies that report preliminary results or a short complete study or protocol. Brief reports usually contain two figures and/or a table; however, the Materials and Methods sections should be detailed to ensure reproducibility of the presented work. The structure is similar to that of an article, and there is a suggested minimum word count of 2500 words.

Conference reports are records of the events of a conference, seminar, or meeting. They should provide a comprehensive overview of a meeting or session, along with relevant background information for the reader. The structure should contain Abstract, Keywords, Introduction, Conference Sections, and Concluding Remarks, with a suggested minimum word count of 2500 words. They can also include all accepted meeting abstracts.

Hypothesis articles introduce a new hypothesis or theory, or a novel interpretation of that theory. They should provide: (1) a novel interpretation of recent data or findings in a specific area of investigation; (2) an accurate presentation of previously posed hypotheses or theories; (3) the hypothesis presented which should be testable in the framework of current knowledge; and (4) the possible inclusion of original data as well as personal insights and opinions. If new data are presented, the structure should follow that of an article. If no new data are included, the structure can be more flexible, but should still include an Abstract, Keywords, Introduction, Relevant sections, and Concluding Remarks, with a suggested minimum word count of 4000 words.

Perspectives are usually an invited type of article that showcase current developments in a specific field. Emphasis is placed on future directions of the field and on the personal assessment of the author. Comments should be situated in the context of existing literature from the previous 3 years. The structure is similar to a review, with a suggested minimum word count of 3500 words.

Project reports are short and/or rapid announcements of project results and implications. They should include a research strategy or approach, the activities, technologies, and details of the project undertaken, conclusions, and recommendations for the future direction of work in the field. The structure is similar to an article, but permits a higher degree of flexibility. The suggested minimum word count is 3500 words.
