If you are an aspiring engineer who wants to get admission into one of the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), then you must be aware of the IIT Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). It is one of the most competitive exams in India that tests your knowledge and skills in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

According to the official statistics, a total of 5,12,000 candidates appeared for the IIT JEE 2012 exam, out of which 24,112 qualified for the counselling process. The eligibility criteria for appearing in this exam were as follows:


  • The candidate must have passed the 10+2 or equivalent examination with at least 60% marks (55% for SC/ST/PwD) in aggregate of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.



  • The candidate must have been born on or after October 1, 1987 (October 1, 1982 for SC/ST/PwD).



  • The candidate must not have attempted the IIT JEE more than twice in consecutive years.



Exam Pattern and Syllabus




Paper 1




The IIT JEE 2012 exam consisted of two papers: Paper 1 and Paper 2. Both the papers were of objective type and had a duration of 3 hours each. The papers were conducted in two sessions: morning session (9 am to 12 noon) and afternoon session (2 pm to 5 pm).


Paper 1 had three sections: Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Each section had 10 questions, making a total of 30 questions. Each question had four choices (A), (B), (C) and (D), out of which only one was correct. For each correct answer, the candidate was awarded 3 marks. For each wrong answer, the candidate was penalized with -1 mark. If no answer was given, zero mark was awarded. The maximum marks for Paper 1 were 210.


The syllabus for Paper 1 was based on the topics covered in the 10+2 or equivalent level of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Some of the important topics were:
