Who is Dieter Dengler?
Dieter Dengler was born in Germany in 1938 and grew up during World War II. He witnessed the horrors of war and developed a fascination with flying. He immigrated to the United States in 1957 and joined the U.S. Navy in 1960. He became a pilot and was assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Ranger in 1965. He flew several combat missions over Vietnam and Laos, until he was shot down on February 1, 1966.
Dengler was captured by the Pathet Lao, a communist guerrilla group allied with North Vietnam. He was tortured and interrogated, and then taken to a prison camp deep in the jungle. There he met other POWs, including Americans Gene DeBruin and Duane Martin, and Asian civilians Y.C. To, Procet and Pisidhi Indradat. Dengler quickly became the leader of the group and planned an escape. He managed to break out of his shackles and cut through the bamboo fence with a stolen knife. He and his fellow prisoners overpowered the guards and fled into the jungle.
Dengler and Martin stuck together, while the others split up. They faced many dangers and hardships, such as hunger, thirst, disease, wild animals and enemy patrols. They built a raft to cross the Mekong River, but it was destroyed by rapids and a waterfall. Martin was killed by a Laotian villager, while Dengler continued alone. He was eventually spotted by a U.S. Air Force pilot and rescued by a helicopter on July 20, 1966. He had lost 40% of his body weight and suffered from various infections and injuries.
Dengler was awarded the Navy Cross for his bravery and survival skills. He returned to active duty and flew more missions over Vietnam. He retired from the Navy in 1977 and became a test pilot and flight instructor. He also wrote a book about his experience, titled Escape from Laos. He died of Lou Gehrig's disease in 2001 at the age of 62.
Why is Rescue Dawn important?
