Plot Summary

Katherine Newbury is a successful and respected host of a long-running late-night talk show, but she is also known for being cold and aloof to her staff and guests. Her ratings have been declining for a decade, and she has not had a female writer on her team since 1992. When she is accused of being a "woman who hates women" by a female comedian, she decides to hire a woman as a token gesture of diversity.

Molly Patel is an Indian-American chemical plant worker who has always dreamed of being a comedy writer. She applies for the job at Katherine's show with no experience or connections, but with a lot of enthusiasm and passion. She is hired as the only woman in Katherine's writers' room, where she faces hostility and skepticism from her male colleagues. She also struggles to fit in with the culture and expectations of the show, which are largely dictated by Katherine's rigid and outdated style.

Molly soon learns that Katherine's show is in danger of being canceled by the network president, Caroline Morton, who wants to replace her with a younger and more popular male comedian, Daniel Tennant. Katherine refuses to accept this fate and vows to fight for her show. She asks Molly for her honest opinion on how to improve her show, and Molly suggests that she should be more authentic and personal with her audience, as well as more relevant and topical with her jokes.

Katherine agrees to try Molly's ideas, and gradually begins to change her approach to comedy and hosting. She also starts to open up more to Molly and her other writers, revealing her vulnerabilities and insecurities. She confides in Molly that she has been married to Walter Lovell, a renowned British author who suffers from Parkinson's disease, for 28 years, but they have grown apart due to her workaholic nature and his illness. She also admits that she had an affair with Charlie Fain, one of her writers, which ended badly.

Molly helps Katherine reconnect with Walter and mend their relationship. She also develops a romantic interest in Tom Campbell, another writer on the show, who initially resented her presence but later warms up to her. Meanwhile, Katherine's show begins to gain more popularity and acclaim, as she tackles more controversial and political topics, such as abortion rights, health care reform, and sexism in comedy. She also invites more diverse and unconventional guests, such as female politicians, activists, and comedians.

However, Katherine's newfound success is threatened when Charlie leaks the news of their affair to the press, hoping to sabotage her reputation and career. Katherine is forced to address the scandal on her show, where she apologizes to Walter and admits that she made a mistake. She also defends Molly from Charlie's accusations that she is unqualified and undeserving of her job. She praises Molly for being talented, hardworking, and loyal, and credits her for saving her show.

Katherine's honesty and sincerity win over the public's sympathy and admiration. Caroline decides to renew her contract for another year, giving her full creative control over her show. Katherine celebrates with Molly and her other writers, who have become more supportive and respectful of her. She also invites Molly to join her on stage for her final monologue, where she thanks her for being her friend and mentor.
