He is best known for his composition of the Kanda Sashti Kavasam, a powerful hymn that invokes the protection and grace of Lord Murugan. He also wrote five other kavasams or armours dedicated to various deities such as Lord Shiva, Goddess Shakthi, and Lord Narayana.


Devaraya Swamigal was born in 1857 in Vallur, a village in the then region of Tondaimandalam. His father, Veeraswami Pillai, was a wealthy and influential person who served as a dubash or interpreter for the British government in Mysore. Devaraya Swamigal had a good education and worked as an accountant. However, he was more interested in learning Tamil literature and poetry. He became a disciple of Thirisipuram Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai, a renowned Tamil scholar and poet from Tiruchy. Under his guidance, Devaraya Swamigal developed his poetic skills and wrote many poems in praise of various gods and goddesses.


Devaraya Swamigal was especially devoted to Lord Murugan, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. He considered him as his personal god and protector. He composed the Kanda Sashti Kavasam as a prayer to Lord Murugan to shield him from all kinds of evils and troubles.
